This is my first touch-keyboard-only phone. I didn't like the stock keyboard at all, tried the X keyboard again just now and i still make too many typos with it even going slow. I've been using swype for the passed week or so and i agree, it doesn't feel gratifying at all. It does the job quite well though, and sometimes i'm amazed at how it can tell what words i'm swyping (swype "problematic" real fast for instance, crazy good accuracy!). I just wish it was a little easier to correct mistakes (thinking back arrow button on main screen, not just delete). My speed is hindered by the use of slang in messages, even though i think it's saving them correctly it still doesn't default to them when i swype.
