The simple solution is to either put your phone on vibrate or not have annoying songs as your tone like my girlfriend does. I'm so tired of hearing some crappy country song every time she gets a text. I stick with only using short notification tones.
But to really answer your question, I've seen this asked a few times and it seems you can't silence it mid-ring.
