At this particular moment in time (very short on experience on Android and this phone), I don't necessarily have plans to synch my phone to the PC. I am hoping to make use of Dropbox to move photos and videos...maybe.
So any other reasons to get this software? If so, any suggestions for where to find a good version? (Not trying to be lazy...just expect a search to find a lot of crap. Hoping for someone in the know to point me).

This far it doesn't seem like Samsung will do OTA updates so you'll probably need Kies to download and install the official updates. It may be ways to do that through unofficial means though.
Other than that there's no reason to use Kies unless you specifically want to. Moving files from and to the phone is done without any software at all (other than your computer's OS of course). Kies does have some video converters and so on but since the Galaxy S, and it's variants, can handle so many types of media files I can't imagine that you would have good use of that (not to mention there's other dedicated programs for that).
