I dont know if all of these are necessary or not (i didnt test between changing) but the whole lot seems to have made a big difference.

When i first used GPS TEST (before changes), I got 1 Sat with no lock.
Now i get about 8-9 Sats with 5-6 locked.

I am also still using XJF3 that my phone came with.

Thanks to everyone who helped me get to this stage... hopefully this helps someone else..

EDIT: I am in the UK btw

I used these settings just to see if I could see any difference, initially with GPS Test I thought that there was maybe a slight difference to the better so I decided to make another walk around the office. This is the result:

Unfortunately this is actually worse. Now in defense of the new settings, today is a cloudy day - which might impede the GPS lock.*

*) - actually clouds do not affect GPS signals I learned later.
