If that works, you could factory reset - Download wanted apps - save apps to SDcard - Reupdate - Reinstall apps from SDcard. Hmmm... what a PITA!
Oops - forgot that protected apps are tough to back up. see
VoXHTC's thread here for a better way. I think this works even without rooting.
