I found a little trick to the location settings. There is no reason to leave 'location setting' on. I believe leaving this on is a bigger drain on the battery than having gps on as it is always finding your location on the network. If gps is on it is only working if an app requests it.

I leave the first option 'use wireless networks' on at all times. This allows apps to get your coarse location as needed. This functions the same whether the second option is on or not.

you will notice that if you are in the settings/location menu you cannot turn gps on without also turning on 'location setting' if they are both off. you can however turn gps on and then turn 'location setting' off and still get gps functionality in apps. I just leave both off here and use the widget to turn gps on and off without activating 'location setting'. You will also notice after doing this that if you return to the location menu or reboot the phone 'location setting' will automatically turn on. you can tell whether it is off or on by the bars being displayed next to the crosshairs in the notification bar.

It may not be much and the only evidence I have supporting battery drain is that turning location on on my old dumb phone was a battery killer. Also helpful for the big brother types.
