My frustration should have been directed at Microsoft. It seems that if one has a later version of Dot Net Framework (such as v4.0), it will not allow CompanionLink to function properly since it really does require v2.0 (as stated in the error message). Silly me for assuming that Microsoft would never make an 'update' which would render software built on earlier versions of its products inoperable. After uninstalling v3.5 and v4.0, CompanionLink worked as well as advertised. 4300 days of calendar entries and over 600 contacts were successfully transferred to respective Google apps.
My only recommendation would be for CompanionLink to warn users that later versions of Dot Net would prevent the software from functioning properly or for updating the software to use Dot Net 4.0.
