Default PC doesn't recognize EVO

I've read a few threads regarding this issue but have not yet been able to find a solution.

My primary question is: Are there different types of Micro USB cabes (i.e. charge only vs. data)? My original HTC cable was chewed to pieces by the family pet and I have since replaced it with what was advertised as a "data cable" that I purchased on eBay.

I have once successfully been able to get my PC (running Vista) to recognize my Evo as a disk drive but I can't remember if it was using the original cable or the replacement.

With the replacement, when I connect the phone to my PC, my PC makes the usual sound that it does when something has been plugged into a USB port. The curser spins for a split second as if it's doing something but nothing happens and I do not get the usual dialogue box.

I do not use HTC Sync.
I have already set the default connection type on the phone to "Disk Drive."
I do not get any icon in the phone's notification bar that I can tap on.

If someone knows the answer to the cable question, that will at least give me a place to start

Thanks!
