Do you have any local electronics store or sprint store? the right cable is not expensive.
I tried multiple USB ports with other peripherals and since the PC had no trouble recognizing those items, I ruled out faulty ports as a reason for my Evo issue.

I do have plenty of electronics store and even a Sprint store about a mile from me but before I buy another piece of plastic, I really want to make sure that the problem is the cable and not somehting else (i.e. user error).

Sprint lists their Micro USB data cable at $19.99 which seems excessive to me. And frankly, I'm a little unhappy with them right now so I don't want to give them more money than I have to. Paying $10/month for 4G when it doesn't even exist in the SF Bay Area yet is irritating

Thanks for the suggestions!
