I just checked the 2x1 (and the 1x2 in case it was a typo) and both of them are editable with separate layers in Photoshop. It must be a glitch with GIMP reading it.
Good work on transferring the files to XCF format for use in GIMP. I've been meaning to do that but didn't have the time. Thanks!
