If 2.2, let alone 2.3 (like said above this thread will be alive for years to come) isn't officially on my captivate before or on December 16th, 2010 I am going to XDA and deciding on the best ROM. When I first bought my phone I read all about hacking etc and decided to wait until 2.2 came out since I figured it would be sooner rather than later (I naively thought that Samsung wouldn't want to be outdone by HTC and Motorola, I failed to understand that Samsung is a fat cat and neither of the other two are, I also believed they would support the Galaxy S in a timely manner seeing how it was a world wide distribution).
I repeat the sentiments of a lot of U.S. Galaxy S owners, I am not ever going to buy a Samsung phone again (smoled be damned). HOWEVER, if by the chance of .00001% (yes that's a % sign so it makes the chance even smaller) the Captivate receives 2.3 (officially) on or before December 16th 2010 I will change my mind and buy another Samsung in the future. If I had the money I would sell my captivate right now and buy an iphone 4 (yes I am that ******* mad at Samsung and there are NO OTHER android devices from at&t [on which I am stuck] that are worth getting imo). I know Samsung promised "by the end of the year" and the 16th is NOT the end of the year but that is when the Nexus S comes out with 2.3!!! coupled with the Galaxy Tab having 2.2 since release is just too much. Way too much mud in my face. We here on this forum are part of the minority customer base, the ones that actually inform themselves, companies don't like people like us. Which is ****** up.
I do NOT buy top-tier state-of-the-art (expensive) phones just to be dropped from software support 4months later with a bunch of garbage non-answers and a subtle undertone of buy our new phone (I don't have the money AND I find it an insult to my intelligence). Just to answer the people who say, "buy a phone as is not what it will be" I call BS, Samsung promised 2.2 and "long term support" THUS buying the phone AS IS included long term support - although I suppose they didn't say "timely" long term support...hmmm. Updates are not optional!!!
I know Android doesn't have a security issue as of date but if it begins to which it could if it continues to grow then updates will become absolutely necessary for the security of your data - I'm surprised that security isn't an issue already I mean how many people use their phones to check their bank accounts or log into any number of their "secure" websites? I use my phone as I use my desktop; If I was a malicious hacker I'd see all these outdated smart phones as a gold mine of opportunity. Would anybody be OK with buying a desktop or a laptop and not getting any updates, and then coming to forums and being told "you bought the thing as is not for what it will be"? It's IMPLIED that you will get updates when you buy a desktop or a laptop and my damn cellphone is no different. I think it's sad that Android is leaving a bad taste in my mouth when it is a good OS, but it definitely has BUGS that reveal that it is a work in progress!! All software IS and all software NEEDS updates (even jesus errr apple releases updates to its god errr iPhone). I'll end with the repeated sentiments of others and myself that google is to blame for this and needs to include update requirements when licensing their OS.
