I agree, except there is a serious flaw in the Android business model that allows manufacturers to build phones with custom hardware and related drivers that are not released as open source. I addressed this in another thread.

This is not entirely true. Sure, you can install OS 2.1 on your HTC Magic or Dream BUT not all the hardware is going to work! Good luck reverse engineering the camera code. This is going to continue being a problem until the Google team makes some fundamental changes!
