I had kept out of the Gmail app hoping to prevent the very thing that happened anyway as a default. I made the change you recommended, did a test, and only got one notification, fifteen minutes after it was sent, which is ok since I have it's set to check every fifteen minutes. But I wonder if the stock email Gmail "push" will now be as spotty as the Yahoo. I noticed that the non-stock email Gmail settings don't have an "Email check frequency". I assume from this that the emails get pushed as they arrive, which I think matches my experience.
