Chris, you cannot do what you are trying to do with a pop account. You must use an imap account to do this.
Also, outlook is NOT synonymous with exchange. In fact, most outlook users are on pop accounts. The majority of small businesses and home accounts use either outlook or msmail. Most small business also do not have IT support in house either, so it is a pain if you don't know this stuff.
You can pay 1and1 an extra $10 a month for a hosted exchange account (imap) and sync your email.
I have a small company with 10 people, all set up on pop accounts. I have had a treo, winmo, bb and now droid. On none of them could i sync email, but everything else sync'd great. frustrated that i can't sync contacts, memos, todo and calendar easily either on droid. I am now syncing calendar with google calendar, haven't found a good solution for any of the others. "the missing sync" is working on this, they now have contacts, but don't have todos and memos yet.
