My guess now is that this feature isn't available on Virgin Mobile. I tried last night and this morning, doing as it told me:
- clicking "Activate Google voicemail on this phone",
- dialing the * + number that appears in the popup.

Both times I get the call answered with this automated answer:

My Voice Settings page then changes the link to "Deactivate Google voicemail on this phone", as if the change took. But I get the same old ring-race behavior.

The same happens when I reverse the voicemail setting, i.e., Click on "Deactivate Google voicemail on this phone". I dial the number that appears in the popup and get the same recording, and the Voice Settings page changes to "Activate Google voicemail on this phone".

Another clue for non-support by Virgin is that the Google Voice popup for "Activate Google voicemail on this phone" defaults to Sprint, and the "Change carrier" drop-down doesn't offer Virgin Mobile as a choice.

Thanks again, I really appreciate your help on this. I'll keep on the lookout in case I've misinterpreted these clues or committed operator error (and maybe I'll try re-installing Google Voice), but it may just be that I've got a low-cost, no-frills carrier that doesn't support this "frill."
I just did some digging (via Google search) and I have found out that, unfortunately, Virgin Mobile does not support Googe Voicemail because it does not support call forwarding ): When we set up Voicemail, really we are just setting up call forwarding so that, when we do not answer the phone, the call is forwarded to the number we put (in the case of Google Voicemail, our GV number). That disappoints me because I was really hoping you could get it set up. Sorry man ): I think that your best bet is to make sure you set up (using www.google.com/voice) so that your Google Voice number forwards to your cell and to Google Chat. That way, you can distribute your GV number if anyone needs to call you, they can call that and it will ring both your phone, and SIPDroid. This isn't the best solution, because you end up with two different things ringing on your phone, but it does work. Alternatively, you could just have GV forward to Google Chat (don't select your cell number for forwarding), and that way people can call your cell number and if you don't answer they can try your Google Voice number (for a VOIP call), or vice versa.

PBXes.org + GoogleVoice = Free N. America calling (thread locked)

I have installed Google Voice app and Sipdroid. I setup google voice and tested it. From Sipdroid, I clicked on "New PBX linked to my Google Voice" and created a new a/c.

After this, I reach a screen which says Sipdroid with two text boxes - Phone number and called party address. What am I supposed to enter here? I don't get a chance to enter the google voice name or pbxes password. I have uninstalled/reinstalled a couple of times with the same result.

Any thoughts on how I can get this to work?

Thanks,

If you clicked the button "New PBX linked to my Google Voice", it should have already set up your phone and entered your PBX/GV information into SIPDroid. The only step now (assuming you set it up correctly) is to receive or place a call. To test if it is set up correctly, simply call your Google Voice number (from a separate phone), and see if SIPDroid starts ringing. Answer it and make sure the phones are connected in a call. To place a call, you will have to set it up in SIPDroid. Open SIPDroid and press the options key then press Settings > Call Options > Preferred call type. Click SIPDroid only if you want ALL calls to be through SIPDroid. If you choose this, any call you make on your phone from the regular Phone app will use SIPDroid. This is probably not the option you want. SIPDroid when available option will do cell calls by default and if you have an internet connection (WiFi or 3G), it will do SIPDroid call instead. Phone option will basically disable SIPDroid calling and the Phone dialer will function as normal. Always ask will pop up and ask if you want to use a regular cell call or SIPDroid, after you dial a number. Alternatively, I recommend that you set this option to "Phone" and you can make SIPDroid calls by dialing + before the number. So, for example, if you want to make a regular cell call, you just open the Phone app and type 555 1234 and it calls as a regular cell call. If you want to make a VOIP call, you just dial +555 1234 and it will use SIPDroid instead of your carrier. Good luck!
