I truly believe that's the reason that you can't purchase phones directly from the manufactures. That way they can wipe their hands of it and leave it to the wireless providers to provide all the support for the handsets.

"It's not my customer, you look after it" sort of thing.

And when I don't get proper service at my "Dealership" I'll contact the manufacture directly.
