One thing that's ironically easier/more open with an iPhone is that you can get replacement parts to rebuild the phone pretty easily off ebay -- I got a replacement LCD screen for my wife's water damaged phone for around $30 (everything else was find after it dried out for a week; I just broke the LCD getting it apart before I found a video showing the right way to do it). You can get the touch sensor, glass, covers, etc similarly cheap (everything except the electronic guts).
I guess that's one advantage of a single popular model vs multiple Androids from different manufacturers. I don't see Eris parts, but see replacement LCDs for the Hero for $50; I don't know if they're similar enough inside, or how easy it is to get apart (you can find many videos on taking an iPhone apart).
