You have to use the Market app on your handset. You can browse by category or search, and selecting an app gives you the option to install.

You can also use AndroLib from your desktop computer. Install a barcode scanner on your handset to read the QR codes provided for each app, and point that at the screen when you find something you'd like to try out.
