I just rooted mine a few minutes ago using this guide:
[GUIDE] How To Root The Sprint CDMA Hero (Windows) - xda-developers
I then installed Fresh 1.1 using the info here:
[ROM] 01/01/10-1.1 | fresh rom | a new year release! - xda-developers
Then Used pre-kitchen 2.0 from here:
Download: Fresh Pre-Kitchen 0.2 | Bug found in auto-rooter Geek For Me – Android CDMA Sprint Hero
Installed custom boot screen, lock screen and removed/installed Stock Apps. Thanks to everyone who has contributed information on rooting and developing all this wonderful stuff for our Hero
