Thanks everyone for all the help.
A 'super scalpel' approach worked for me.
1. Check my sent items folder
2. Noted the message that showed my last response from my calendar
3. Opened message to check date of appointment
4. Went to that date on phone calendar, noted a duplicated appointment - deleted both appointments
5. Re-sync - bada boom bada bing - problem solved.
I remembered that I had updated a single meeting in a series on the phone directly from within the calendar app - won't do that again!
