I'm not intimiately familiar with the Thrashers' situation in Atlanta. Most of the news I heard about a possible move of a team to Winnipeg has been centred aroud Phoenix (formerly the Winnipeg Jets) and the ownership situation there. When word of a possible relocation of Atlanta to Winnipeg came out, it caught me by surprise. The city of Glendale (where the Phoenix Coyotes play) voted to cover operating losses of the Coyotes for the next year, it ended any possibility of their going to Winnipeg. Now it's Atlanta to Winnipeg. I'd be interested to know more about the situation there from any members from Atlanta. For many years now, the media here has just reported about Phoenix, but very little about Atlanta.
It's like deja vous. Thirty years ago, an NHL team (The Flames) moved from Atlanta to Calgary. Now it's from Atlanta to Winnipeg. As a Canadian, I am happy that the NHL has decided to put a team in a place where people love hockey. I was really sad when the Jets left Winnipeg 15 years ago. I guess the economic climate has changed since then to allow a team to go back to Winnipeg. Back in the 90's, the lack of a salary cap/revenue sharing and the Canada/US dollar exchange rate made it very difficult for Winnipeg to support a team. Hopefully, now they can support a team long term. It is probably still a challenge as Winnipeg will be the smallest market in the NHL in terms of population. Even though the city's population is small compared to many other cities, it probably has a large enough contingent of hockey fans.

Their attendance rates are also among the lowest in the NHL. The reason the Yotes got as much attention as they did was that
2. They made the playoffs and have a stronger fan base when it came to attendance. While they had low attendance, they didnt see it as low as the Thrashers.
3. Atl isnt really a big hockey market. While Arizona isnt either, no one really pays attention to a team that never makes the playoffs. Even with the Preds, they atleast MADE the playoffs, but hadnt won till this year.
