Update from Rogers re: Dream/Magic 911
Hi All - Wanted to share the following with you:
Rogers believes that telecommunications services play an important role in ensuring public safety and we take the safety of our customers extremely seriously. One of the ways we are helping to make sure our customers are safe is through enhancements to 911 calling that use advanced technology to locate a wireless customer’s current location and provide it to emergency workers.
We have been rolling out these 911 enhancements and the vast majority of our network area now has this important safety feature in place. However we have learned that there are problems with the operating software of our HTC Dream and HTC Magic devices that – when combined with this new locating technology - could lead to 911 calls not going through in certain situations. This was not an issue when we first tested the HTC devices last Spring.
Over the past week we have been notifying all our HTC Dream and Magic customers about this issue and removed these devices from sale. However, we are not satisfied with this situation and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or concern this has caused our customers. We take this matter very seriously and we are currently investigating the way this issue was addressed to determine how we can improve our internal and external processes.
HTC is working on a software fix that we will make available as soon as possible. We are expediting the testing and implementation of this fix working with HTC.
In the meantime, we recommend all Rogers HTC Dream and Magic customers follow these steps to ensure GPS is disabled on their phones:
1) Select Menu
2) Select Settings
3) Select Location
4) Uncheck Enable GPS Satellite
Thanks,
Mary
