I tried going from 0.4 to 0.8.x and got the same result. I tried deleting all of the apps from /system that he advised, but still no good. I eventually bit the bullet, did a full data wipe (factory reset), then installed 0.8.2 and now 0.8.3.
I have all 140 of my apps backed up and my Sweeter Home theme saved, so it's really not that big of a deal to start from scratch.
