I opted to move to Pete's Bugless beast ROM, which doesn't have a problem with the WiFI, and then restored from the 1G OC boot image - works like a champ now. AFAICT, the kernel that Pete used to make the Bugless does not have any conflicts with the OC boot IMGs, so they play nicely together. At least, that is my understanding.

When I ever get those instructions figured out I may try Sholes (or others) but for now I'll stick with Pete's + 1G - Pete's looks radically better with the glassified effects on many of the widgets and the home screen notification bar anyway....

And the performance is pretty damn good too. See Droid is wrecking my home wireless connection for WiFi speed tests *and* a screen cap of Speedtest.net app (with glassified Notification bar).

I'll try to make some more screen caps of my setup later tonight.
