You have to go through several steps (make sure auto-sync is off before you start
1) Go to settings and select applications
2) From that screen select Manage Applications
3) Use your options button to display "sort by size" and "filter" select filter
4) Change the filter options from Downloaded (default) to All
5) You will now see lots more applications in the list and you should scroll to the application that sync is getting stuck on (for me it was calendar)
6) There will be two application entries (using calendar as the example, there is calendar and calendar storage
7) Select each one in turn and touch the "clear data" button
8) When the data shows zero, power the Droid off and pull the battery out for several (not sure how many exactly) minutes - Good time for a coffee break
9) Replace battery - power up and re-enable auto sync

This should clear up the problem, as it has for me and several others.

I hope this helps.
