Well, since this is a work phone and he needs his exchange items, we started looking at other options than using active sync. What we came up with might help others, so I thought I'd note it. I'm not sure if will work 100%, but it seems like it should.

1, Create a 2nd Gmail account that'll be used just for work. Most people use a firstname.lastname format, so I suggested firstname.work and added that account to your phone. Depending on which functions do/don't work, only sync those items that are needed. In our case it was only contacts.

2. Download and install Google Apps Sync for Microsoft OutlookŪ on your work PC (or whatever you primarily use to access outlook).

In essence, this should sync everything from Outlook to the work gmail account which you can access on your phone. Since you have to have the app running on your desktop to sync items, he still used active sync to connect to the exchange server to send/receive emails and update his calendar, but now he has the ability to get his contacts too.
