Have you checked out
Brighteriffic, available free in the Market? I downloaded it recently and have only briefly checked it out so far, but it gives you the option to set a low and a regular brightness setting (as long as you are not using the Droid's automatic brightness setting), then put a widget on your home screen allowing you to switch between the two. Not sure if the low setting is low enough, but you could check it out.
I've been using their Timeriffic to control settings at night....you can set it to turn on airplane mode at a set time and on again at a set time, etc.
