Is it really as easy as loading update.zip and installing it to root, and then repeating that process for BB? Does it seamlessly open up a whole new and exciting world, or are there obstacles that I need to be aware of?
Thanks for assuaging my concerns and taking the time to respond.

While I am very comfortable with linux, I am completely new to Android. I have been hesitant to update my phone, but I finally took the plunge today as I really wanted to have access to tethering.
My advice is to go to
Sholes and download the smupdater. It really makes everything easy. The warnings are a bit disconcerting, but I think they are just making sure that you know that you are on you own. Besides download time the whole process takes maybe 5 minutes. This is a free download, but if you use it and it is worthwhile (it is), a donation would be nice.
I was honestly disappointed with the results at first until I used setcpu and turned up the CPU. Now the phone is super responsive and with onDemand setting, it saves on battery life while the phone is idle.
There are many many people that have rooted and installed a custom rom without any problems, while there have been a few posts talking about "bricked" droids. I think the sholes updater makes it much less likely that something will go wrong along the way.
