This'll be my first Android, but I've been going through this same waiting game of Verizon holding back RIM's OS updates, having to rely on overseas carriers to release something, or else various (sometimes questionable) community mods. My phone was more-or-less abandoned by RIM & Verizon after about a year, with plenty of bugs and even some broken features that worked in previous releases.

I'm practically salivating at the thought of having something close to a direct OS pipe from Google. I know it's not going to be quite that easy, but the GNex is bound to be the best-supported device I've ever owned.
