Funny because as soon as I posted my latest reply above, I went to the Swype site and noticed the new beta release (I think on 12/21 or so). I downloaded and installed just to stay up to date.
FYI for anyone reading this thread...the latest update and, if I recall, the other updates do NOT preserve your data, specifically your user dictionary
, because I had to uninstall the current version of Swype, run the installed to download the latest beta and install that for your keyboard. So be prepared to have to "re-learn" some personal words such as named, nicknames, email addresses...and curses!!
What I do is actually keep a text file of a whoooooole bunch of words that I know the user dictionary doesn't save. Then if you select ALL the text and his the "swype key" at the bottom left of the keyboard, Swype prompts you to "save all" of the highlighted words and then I'm back in business
