Its much simpler to flash a rooted update
I'm not sure forced, over-the-air updates are a real good idea in the first place. When I heard 2.3.6 was out, I scratched my head and wondered why I was still "stuck" with 2.3.5. I checked the update option everyday for a week and no new version presented itself. Turns out that the 2.3.6 update many people were FORCED to accept... started draining battery power like crazy and AT&T pulled the update. I'm glad I was spared and allowed the time to let others find the problems with the update without having to deal with them myself. I may root just to stop AT&T from forcing things down my throat.
Windows Mobile NEVER did that stuff to me. I watched in horror (and never-ending complaining) as my girlfriend dutifully performed every iOS update Apple supplied, despite the fact that it was clear all their updates were really aimed at phones newer than hers which didn't have the muscle to run them properly. Every new update rendered her phone slower and slower to the point of uselessness.
