I also agree with Microsoft Security Essentials. It is highly rated and uses very little resources. I used Avira prior to that (another highly rated AV), but I had the free version so you get a pop up when it updates.

Comodo makes the best free firewall that I'm aware of, but these arent really necessary. Once again, watch your browsing habits. If you get a virus while doing something in particular, DONT DO IT AGAIN!

It usually takes me a few months before I get around to installing an AV after a format and I still never get viruses.

Oh yeah, I also agree with Malwarebytes. I've been removing spyware and viruses for a decade and it has done the best job. In the past multiple programs were required to get a PC as clean as this one can do.

Microsoft Security Essentials, Comodo Firewall, NO porn sites you randomly find on google, and a biweekly scan with Malwarebytes. You'll be good.
