hah you sure can! Some people like to name their backups and rom manager makes that easier so if you like to do that you might want to stick to RM. I just create a notepad text file and put it in my clockworkmod folder. I update it each time I make a backup and refer to the string of numbers cwm makes when naming a backup so I know what backup is what.
The only thing I use ROM Manager for is to update CWM when an update is available. No disrespect meant to Mr Dutta as he is an Android pioneer imo.
Speaking of, I just updated my CWM to a modded "skipless" version 5.5.0.4 from rootz
here and it's so nice to have a fully functional CWM again. The updated script has been pushed to koush I'd assume we'll see the update in rom manager fairly soon if you're gun shy in adb. I am, but it was pretty simple
