Welcome to the forums Steel!
I first started out (after my WinMo phone) with the Droid 1 which had a slide out keyboard. That thing was horrible. My wife got used to it, but I never could. The screen wasn't much bigger than the iPhone, but I got used to typing on screen. The nice thing about Android is there are many different keyboard apps available in the Market. The one I love is SwiftKey. It has excellent text prediction and correction so you can really type quickly and get quite used to it.
Right now, I'm using a Galaxy Nexus which is just a touch larger than the Razr Maxx. The best thing you can do is hop into a Verizon store and just play with one and see if it's for you. Coming from a physical keyboard, it may take a week or so to get used to, but you'll get the hang of it in no time!
