I wouldn't say I'm crippling it. By turning off certain functions, which _don't_ need to be running all the time, I am prolonging the availability of those functions when I do need/want them. For example, when I'm at work, my phone doesn't need to be updating my calendar or email, since I can check those things on my computer.
If I _never_ turned on those functions, I would agree with you, but I use them when I need/want them.
