The NYT only shows comparability with the NOOK Color, Tablet or original NOOK. Others, like USA Today, show compatibility with the NOOK Android App. I think you're screwed on CM. You could always revert to B&N firmware and root that. I have done that to be able to read my Wired Magazine subscription. Most things work just fine, though there are a few aggravations.
You could set up to dual boot: CM off SD and B&N firmware off of eMMC, or internal with both on eMMC. You will have to switch back and forth to read the paper, though.
Alternately, you could pick up a NOOK Simple Touch for $100 to read the paper.
