Right seems its ringo pro causing the dificulties all of a sudden. I did update it recently. Maybe the problems been around since then but I just never noticed it.
I have taken the g1's message tones off of silent. As that's what ringo requires. I've gone into message settings to take it off silent and select the new tone. It gave me the option of selecting a tone from ringo. So I did that. So now my uploaded tone plays straight away. Which then prompts ringo to play it again as I still had it selected seperatly via ringo. I've now put ringo on silent and still have the same tone selected in message settings via ringo and it plays straight away. Strange but it worked.
