Not entirely true.

Nokia were one of the founding firms who developed almost all of what we enjoy on our phones today. As such they have a vast array of patents which amongst the other firms they usually gave freely in return for use of another firms patents.

This worked pretty well until Apple came along.....

Apple would patent air if they could, and charge everyone for using it.
