Your wife sounds like mine. Went to school there for 4 years and never went near a basketball game. She was a hippie :-)
I was a Duke fan back when I was, I don't know, 13 or 14, and paid attention. I haven't watched college sports in..well..a long time.
I have several friends who went to both schools - and State for that matter - (I grew up in eastern NC) and it's always funny to watch them butt heads about it.
