Get adb here, and for rooting, save yourself trouble and just get the Mini-SDK, it has adb/fastboot packages for Win, OS X and of course, Linux.

ADB Guide (updated 12/05/2011)

Included in all of our root forum guides and the Android sticky here, so it should be easy to find.
