I think part of it is others antagonizing people who don't feel the need to update. (i.e. being called pansies and offering solutions like "just get a new phone if you brick it").

I could care less what others do to their phones. I would root in a second, but have no real need to upgrade unofficially to 2.1.

edit: not to mention that, at one point, 75% of the threads created on page one had something to do with 2.1.
