i downloaded it from droid and tried to use it for my eris(on both erises i had) and it still displays the htc keyboard and i did everything i could think of

as long as it is downloaded and checked under locale and text then whenever you are in e-mail or sms app just long press on the text box area and then select input method >better keyboard. that is what i had to do for swype ... you might wanna check it out. it rocks
