As my Member badge shows, I don't have a Samsung, but I have had my phone freeze-up. I do have a few suggestion.
First, when it does freeze-up, I recommend your husband do a hard reboot by pulling the batter and putting it back in after 30 seconds.
My other suggestion is, that your husband might what to try doing a Factory Reset. The your husband can log into Google Play and find all of the apps he has downloaded and reinstall them.
