I'm on Telus (Canada) and discovered that placing a 1 in front of the 10-digit phone number in the contacts helps display the proper contact info on an incoming call. Using the 1+ phone number when dialing out is not a problem even if dialing locally. This will probably help if you are in North America as 1+ is the long distance prefix.
