When they activate it the phone it should not delete what you have on the phone. If you want to be safe just back up all your contacts to your SD or as you have an active GMail the contacts can be automatically backed that way.
Any pictures or docs could also be backed up to your computer. Or just pull the SD prior to trying to activate it.
