HTC Sync is flakey at best, so maybe it's not the cable. I had to replug my Vivid into my PC several times before the phone could see that HTC software was installed on the PC. I'm guessing it's a driver issue, and updating to the latest version of HTC Sync didn't help.
Meanwhile, as with you, Windows could see the phone fine, so I've abandoned HTC Sync and rely on My Phone Explorer to sync.
