I emailed HTC support last night about the aforementioned problem and here is the reply...

Do you know if this is a system wide issue? Does this affect all sound in the phone, or is it restricted to just media player audio? I notice on the link you provided, someone has already done a hard reset. Have you tried this step yet? I would normally suggest leaving a hard reset as a last resort, but I can not see many other options available.
If you hear of anyone else experiencing this issue, please do urge them to contact us.
