I installed DamageControl v1.0 (Android 2.1) custom rom about a week ago. Its my every day rom and works awesome. The phone is super fast and it has the new HTC Sense. The only thing that I miss is visual voicemail. Im waiting on a Google voice invite. I heard it does the job for voicemail very good. Lots of enhancements:
- U can see your Facebook contacts info in People app
- The "Gallery" app is awesome and u can see your picassa albums too
- New HTC Sense, u can see 7 cards of your 7 screens at once
- Can install Google Nav (no need for sprint nav)
- About 160mb free of memory after install the rom. Wow!
- Wireless Tether (You can share your internet service with any wireless device)
- Spanish language support out of the box (locale)
- Youtube app actually works
- Camera enhancements(now with effects and lots of options)
- Really, really fast
- Its been optimized to kill apps that should not be open in the background
- Faster than any other 1.5 or 1.6 rom with overclocking
I would highly recommend rooting and installing a 2.1 Rom. I really dont care about sprints official update anymore. Probably only for the devs to optimize even more the custom roms.
Theres plenty of step by step instructions out there. If you know how to type, do copy & paste and can follow instructions, you can do it.

I'm running Fresh 2.0 (Android 2.1) that is built off of this ROM. I must agree with energizer, 2.1 blows 1.x out of the water. It's faster than my iPhone 3G I had, and my Palm Pre. THIS is what Android is supposed to be. Gone are lags and issues with multitasking. Hell, calls connect so fast it's unbelievable, and no more 'phone lagging so bad I can't even answer an incoming call' issue.
Literally night and day, the way this phone runs. Only thing I can't get working is Google Earth, probably because it's specifically made for the N1 at the moment.
Really digging 2.1. Very curious to see how fast the official HTC/Sprint ROM is compared to what I have now. Will they screw it up? I can't believe they'd want to ruin this experience...
