Of course, you could always just root your phone and flash with Modaco's latest Sprint HTC Hero ROM.. it comes with "Wifi Tether for Root Users" pre-installed.. works just fine.. and is absolutely FREE! No need to pay extra to access https sites, yadda yadda.. I believe you can even enable wep 128 bit encryption for the connection, too!
It will allow you to share the access with any wifi-capable device in your possession.. be it computers, PDAs, etc..
Do a lil googlin' and research modaco's roms...
