Was going to comment on that myself, as Handspring (then Palm) made a decent name for themselves with the Trios back around 2000. Even then, I'd say the Blackberry was the first smartphone that people took notice of.
And didn't Apple originally argue against calling the iPhone a smartphone? I seem to remember them using that excuse when asked why it didn't support copy/paste.
